The privatization of prisons is just one factor. By offering more beds at a lower cost than the government can offer, that means there is more incentive to fill those beds. The incentive being, making a profit. Capitalism being what it is today can be an all-consuming process and in many cases, can become a cancer on society. For example, the staggering number of beds occupied by those with mental health issues, or beds that are allocated for use to those that are being detained for immigration-related issues. In those cases, there is no difference in the treatment, housing, actions by officials. This is what is now becoming known as crimmigration. With all of these factors, the fact that the privatization of prisons remains largely an unregulated industry should come as no surprise, but that does not mean we should accept it.
